AAAA REPS AT NCCU”LONELY WORDS” PLAY

The Julius Chambers Biomedical /Biotechnological Research Institute in collaboration with NCCU Department of Theatre staged "LONELY WORDS", a play for mature audiences to stimulate discussion about Black relationships and HIV/AIDS. "LONELY WORDS" is about the destructiveness of lies, but more importantly is the healing that can take place when people decide to love themselves and be honest with their partners and loved ones.

There is a resurgence of STDs and HIV/AIDS in Eastern North Carolina rural communities. The City of Durham, also known as the City of Medicine, is the fourth urban statistical slot of new cases. State Health officials, churches, and community advocacy groups are concern. It was obvious from in post play panel discussion that there is also lack of honesty inside and outside which is playing a large role for the resurgence of AIDS/HIV.

We cannot see HIV/AIDS on a person and people are not being truthful about their sexual history or asking questions about their partners sexual history. We have to love ourselves enough to protect ourselves; get tested!!

The play featured on July 20-21 & 27-28 at 8 pm with a 2 pm performance on Sunday, July 29th. Attendance for the 27th weekend performances was very high especially Sunday with full capacity of 350. An estimated total of 1000 saw the play and receive educational brochures on STDs, HIV/AIDS and other diseases plus completed surveys for report. Community HIV/AIDS advocacy groups that were present were TROSA, NCCU PROJECT SAFE, AAAA,

Center for AIDS Research and the Mayor's Office, City of Durham.

The play was funded from a NIH grant.

"LONELY WORDS" returns to stage first and second weekends in October 2007. It is FREE and open to public.
